Mrs. DeYoung and Mrs. B Retell Green Eggs and Ham

Do you like green eggs and ham?

 

Would you like them in a house?

 

Would you eat them in a box?

Would you eat them with a fox?

Would you like them with a mouse?

 

You may like them in a tree!

Try them! Try them!

"If you will let me be, I will try them. You will see."

"Say! I like green eggs and ham! I do! I like them, Sam-I-am!"

 

After Mrs. DeYoung and Mrs. B finished retelling the story of "Green Eggs and Ham", they made green eggs and ham for the whole class.  All the students were encouraged to try "Green Eggs and Ham!"  Some tried and some did not.  Most liked "Green Eggs and Ham!"

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We were very lucky to have Ms. Ruggaber join us from the University of Windsor's Teachers College. The three weeks she was with us flew by and we miss her already. While she was here, one of the things we enjoyed was when she shared with us Eric Carl's story of ; "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

After she read the story with the class, she had the children retell the story using props and pictures.

 

Curriculum Expectation: Language:  Students will retell stories in proper sequence, using pictures in the book and/or props.

 

She then placed several items at our art and writing centre and encouraged the class to use these items to retell the story by using different medias.

This student chose to use markers to draw: "The Hungry Caterpillar" with materials she found at the Writing Centre.

These students found different materials at the Art Centre to create some pictures from the story.

This student told me; "I made the Hungry Caterpillar when he was eating and the black dots are what he ate!"

These two students said they made a caterpillar puppet.

"I made a happy red caterpillar! Do you see the smile, Mrs. DeYoung?"

When we put out a variety of items on this day, this student said she noticed the caterpillar had a round body and decided she needed to
make circles. When she couldn't make them the way she wanted and
was getting frustrated, her friend suggested she trace something.
They went on a shape hunt to find a circle.

(Problem Solving and fine motor skills)

 

The students then worked on a LARGE caterpillar that will be displayed on our classroom door.

We then took the left over items and placed them at the Art Centre ........

The students are very proud of their creations.  They will be displayed around our classroom and will be sent home at a later time.

Busy week of learning

We're going on a Word Hunt !!!

Over the last several days we have noticed the children walking around the room and copying the sign in sheets, poems and words around the room. Today, we suggested they go on a "Word Hunt" so we could add more words to our word wall.

Dress-up Centre 

We would like to thank the families that donated all of the awesome clothes to our Dress-up Centre. The students were very excited to show them off.

We noticed on another blog that they were looking at the use of a mirror to enhance exploration and creativity. We were eager to try this with our class.

We set up our mirror on top of the water table and set some small blocks beside the table. The children became curious and started to explore right away.

 Later in the day, we set some large blocks on the floor so they could stand on them to get a different view.

A Leaf Can Be .....

Today, we were very excited to share with the students some special leaves that Mrs.Chlumecky; ( Grade One teacher); got from a neighbour.  She thought they were leaves from an Elephant Plant but found out they came from another exotic plant but couldn't remember the name. We will use our computers or the smart board to find out where they came from.  

When Mrs Abela saw these leaves, she shared with us the perfect book;

" A Leaf Can Be....." by Laura Purdie Salas

The students were amazed at the size of the leaves.

One of the students said; "a leaf can be a fan".

Then Mrs. Olafson used the largest leaf to fan the whole class.

Mrs. Olafson said...."This huge leaf can be an umbrella for 4 friends, at the same time."

The students helped to put the leaves in order from largest to smallest.

This student wanted a picture of her laying beside the leaf to show everyone how big the leaf was.We then explored both standard and non-standard forms of measurement.

A meter stick 
The students learned that a meter stick was a standard form of measurement.

This student wanted to see if she was bigger then all of the leaves. This was a great example of non-standard measurement.

These students used a measuring tape, which they found out was a standard measurement.

This student worked a long time to see how many linking cubes it would take to be as tall as the leaf.

The students really enjoyed using their imagination with the leaves.
