Fun in the Snow

When the cold, cold, weather finally broke, we took every chance to get outside and play in the snow.

*Please remember to send your child to school with a warm jacket, snow pants, boots, hat and mittens to play outside two times a day.

Puddle Measurement

It was a cold rainy day in November and we just had to get outside for some fresh air.  We discovered how to investigate the puddles and still stay dry.....

Ms Lee brought out a collection of rulers and yard sticks for the children to go on a puddle hunt and measure how deep the puddles were. This was an awesome example of using our natural environment to reach one of our math expectations.

Exploring Standard and Non-Standard forms of measurement.

 One of our students decided to collect several different sizes of sticks to pass out to his friends to measure the puddles. He said; "these are non-standard measurement tools because they don't have numbers on them and the sticks are all different sizes. "

Some students also measured how wide the puddles were. 

This student used a stick to measure how deep the puddle was. He said his stick was bigger then the puddle. 

Fishing for Leaves??

 November had lots of rainy, wet and cold days. On this day, the children went out to our sand pit to explore. They were wondering what happened to the sand with all the rain and with the cold weather. They were very excited to see the huge puddle of water and all these leaves that had gathered within it.

Several of the children decided it looked like a lake of "leaf fish" and wanted to go fishing. 

Some children carefully stretched out as far as they could to reach the perfect fish.  

Others gathered sticks to use as fishing poles. 

This was a great opportunity to problem solve how they were going to reach the "leaf fish" without falling in. I wish I could of captured the team work and co-operation between the students.

Collecting Snowflakes !!!

The class was full of excitement with our first snowfall this year. We brought out black construction paper to see if we could catch snowflakes. It wasn't long before some of  the children were trying to not only capture a few snowflakes but fill their page.

This student worked with a few other friends to build a tiny snowman. They brought it inside to see how long it would take to melt. Once they were inside, they soon forgot about it and when they remembered it was a puddle in the science centre.  She replied; "Well, that didn't take long. It was too hot in here."

Learning to care for living things in our classroom.

The children have been taking care of our classroom fish since Mrs. B brought them into our room in October. Throughout the day, many children check in on them.  Some have read stories by them and drew pictures and a new child is chosen to feed the fish each day.

After losing two fish in a week, we decided that we needed to figure out what was happening in our tank. One of our students thought we needed to give them clean water. So Miss McKay brought in a syphon she uses to clean her tanks at home and a small group of children were excited to help out.

WOW, a clean fish tank!  Miss McKay added some Water Snails to help keep our tank clean.

WORMS

Early in November during a misty Outdoor Learning time, a group of students went on a worm hunt with Mrs. DeYoung.  

When we brought in our small collection of worms, the students decided we needed to give them a "Worm House."  

After some research on our classroom iPad, we decided we needed to get them some more dirt, water, rocks and grass. The students said they needed to hide and slither through dirt and grass. They also knew worms liked water because they always found them after it rained.

 

Winter is coming !! Building school bird feeders in our playground.

Winter is around the corner and the weather is getting colder already, please send your child dressed appropriately.

Mrs. Taylor is digging the hole for the post, for our bird feeder. The children called the post hole digger, "dirt tweezers!"

The children were excited to see just how far the hole went down.

We used a level to make sure it was ready to put the tray on the top. One student said that was inportant so the food didn't fall off the tray. Another student said it had to be in the middle, even.

The Big Crunch

The Big Crunch

 On Thursday, October 24, the students and staff participated in; "The Big Crunch !" We had some apples donated to the school from the Jump Start Program. We passed out an apple to each student and staff member and Mrs. Uttley counted down 3,2,1 and we all took a bite from our apple at the same time. These apples were donated to Prince Edward to help us promote healthy eating.

Curriculum Expectation: Health and Physical Activity:  Students will investigate the benefits of nutritious foods and explore ways of ensuring healthy eating.

While we were all outside, the whole school joined Mrs. Uttley and danced to some familiar music. We had a great time eating a healthy snack and getting some exercise.
