Exploring Bears

The children in our class were "Bear Crazy" after reading a story with Mrs. Olafson and then watching a video of a new born Polar Bear at the Toronto Zoo on the Smart Board. We invited them to bring in their stuffed animals. They wanted somewhere for their animals to play and of course sleep. Mrs. Zeman, an ECE student from St. Clair College, brought in a tent for us to turn into a cave.

A large group of students worked together to turn the tent into a cave.

With their interest in Polar Bears, Mrs. Zeman did an awesome experiment with them to see how Polar Bears keep warm in such a cold environment.

She had a container with snow, ice and water that the children were encouraged to explore.

After exploring the cold water, she added a bag of lard which she explained was like the Polar Bears' blubber or as we know, fat. First she had one student put a hand in the blubber that was in the cold water, while the other student put their hand in the cold water. She wanted to see who could keep their hand in the water the longest.

Guess who won?

Later on, she had the students use both hands, one in the water and one in the blubber. When she did this, the children could feel the difference at the same time.

These students made a truck that could go and find the bears.
