The Gummy Bear Experiement

"What do you think will happen if we put a Gummy Bear in water?"

We talked about how and why we do experiments. When we started the conversation, we told the children when doing experiments we have 3 steps.
1st  Predict
2nd Observe
3rd Communicate

Predict:  "I think it will grow really big."
"I think the water will change colours."
"I think nothing will happen if you only have water. You have to add something!"

Every child that was interested was given two Gummy Bears, one to explore their 4 senses with and then eat of course. They put water in a clear cup, dropped the Gummy Bear in and then placed it on the Light Table and waited to see what would happen.

Observe:
"There are bubbles all around the bears."
"The bear is getting bigger."
"It smells good."

Several children observed the gummy bears on and off for the next couple of days.

On Monday, we were surprised to see how big they grew.

The children were able to explore them.

Communicate:

"It is slimy."
"The bubbles are gone."
"It smells good but feels yucky. I don't want to eat it."
"It stretched big."
"When it is big, it has more detail. You can see it better."

"If I use the magnify glass, I can really see it. Even on the one not in water."
